I’d actually say that your ideas come from the art collective, those artists that you’ve always been interested in and figuring out what they would do in those situations. That’s what an artist is anyway. He’s just a single member of a collective, the whole generation that went before.
—— Sam Gilliam,American Artscape Magazine
Famous art groups throughout history have often formed spontaneously – a group of like-minded rebels who shouted for unpopular artistic ideas and organized exhibitions of various kinds. These groups were often ridiculed or ignored, especially in their infancy, but with the artists’ strong beliefs, persistence, and, of course, solid work, the artists were gradually recognized, understood, and even sought out by the world. Building 23, a group of young artists, was no exception; it was formed by a group of sophomore and junior students from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), who rented space in Caochangdi, Beijing, and organized more than a dozen exhibitions with more than 100 young artists. Building 23 is another young art group that deserves to be documented, following N12. After the Pandemic, these young people reunited and held group exhibitions at SIMPLE ONE in Sanlitun, China, presenting their works to a wider audience.
