Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear’d, Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone…
—— John Keats,Ode on a Grecian Urn
Hax, Ioh, Bydon, Jui, Ebela, Cugan, Keo, Taneoki, Sei, Kardizu, Aegamonta — these surreal and mysterious places are eternal civilizations crafted by Chi Wing Lo, transcending time and gravity. They represent his ideal world within the realm of sculpture. In this imagined, floating journey, a poetic and philosophical exploration unfolds, delving into themes of freedom, rebirth, balance, harmony, and the merging of time and memory, erasing the boundary between past and future.
The geometric forms in his sculptures—cylinders, cubes, spheres—evoke architectural structures yet transcend symmetrical shapes. Parabolic surfaces, flowing lines, undulating arrangements, and subtle surface textures infuse the sculptures with a dynamic sense of life and congruity. Each element is meticulously crafted to achieve a new visual language, balancing perception and space.
Yet Chi Wing Lo’s sculptures are not confined to physical space alone; they also serve as vessels for human consciousness, creating a dialogue between internal and external spaces, inner and outer selves, encompassing emotions, thoughts, and memories. Drawing from materials, techniques, and forms of the ancient world, his works transcend the speed and fragmentation of the modern era. His sculptures become meditative objects, awakening an earnest awareness and contemplation that point toward the future, bridging across eras. Yale professor Daniel Sherer notes, “Lo’s sculptures remind us that the role of art is to encourage people to alter the habitual pace of life, to experience an alternative form of time—a slower, almost timeless time. The material mysteries he creates possess a decelerating force, guiding scattered thoughts back to the source of contemplation, where mental activity quiets, and thought achieves a state of pure completeness.”
Professor Wang Jian of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts remarks in his book Angels from Infinity: The Sculpture of Chi Wing Lo, “Lo’s sculpture is not, or not entirely, a continuation of modernism; that is the first judgment. His work signifies a ‘shift’ in relation to the modernist art that prevailed in the twentieth century, that is the second. His sculpture holds a continuity with ancient European culture, yet also connects with European modern art, establishing a new path for the twenty-first century, that is the third” Chi Wing Lo’s creations diverge entirely from the modernist rejection of classical beauty and order; he does not embrace the speed, violence, and fragmentation common in modernism but returns to the timeless values of beauty, order, and balance. Bridging past and present, and cultures of known and unknown, he offers a constructive response, invoking poetry in space to resonate with both emotions and intellect.
Chi Wing Lo channels his sensitivity and perspective into an enduring exploration of the human spirit and civilization. As he himself states, “The sculptures possess a devilish deliberation, a paradoxical sense of ambiguity and clarity that unlocks the limits of our perception.”
