An active line on a walk, moving freely without a goal. A walk for walk’s sake.

—— Paul Klee, Pedagogical Sketchbook (1925)
“NOT ONLY…BUT ALSO…” as a set of correlative conjunctions lightly gestures toward a dual significance—on the structural level, a juxtaposition; on the discursive level, a void. Formally, the artist occupies the blank space as the core of expression, conveying within the same discursive framework a subtle overlapping and an implicit progression. In terms of meaning, the choice is not to summarize, anchor, or constrain through established theories or vocabularies, but rather to peel away a landscape-like spectacle of visual display, leaving the stage open to the abundance of creation itself.

The exhibition presents the recent works of ten young artists, each with a distinctive style. There are restrained and austere realist expressions, vibrant and luminous depictions of scenes, as well as vivid and ambiguous abstract gestures; works that merge utilitarianism with decorative aesthetics, and others that evoke atmospheres through music. The objects and settings, forms and techniques across different works spontaneously interlace, collide at random, and together form a resilient intertextual space. Perception diffuses through the tension of scale and the shifts of color and shade, while its generative mechanism arises precisely from reciprocity. Each work inevitably acts both as subject and as reference, asserting its own presence while reflecting the landscapes of others.

This collective scene also serves as a reminder: like the tides, creators and their creations continually move forward. Contemporary, avant-garde, cutting-edge… however we attempt to name the art of the present, what remains unchanged is its ceaseless self-renewal. We can only follow this dialectical nature, confronting the spiral progression of its development. “Not only…but also…” is a linguistic architecture, but it may also be understood as a modest response: while consolidating structure, thought takes a step further—however slight.

SIMPLE ONE|Observe · Discuss Project

The project aims to observe the current state of art through diversified exhibitions and, through discussions, explore the logic of art development and the multiple possibilities of art in the future that lie beneath the phenomenon.
